Implemented on July 1st, 2017, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's most significant indirect tax reform since independence. It replaced a complex web of central and state taxes including VAT, Excise Duty, Service Tax, and Octroi. GST is a destination-based tax, meaning the tax revenue goes to the state where the final consumption occurs, not where the goods were manufactured.
By operating on a dual structure (CGST and SGST for intra-state, IGST for inter-state), it creates a unified national market. Registering for a GSTIN ensures that businesses operate legally, contribute to the formal economy, and benefit from the Input Tax Credit (ITC) mechanism that completely eliminates the cascading effect of taxes (tax on tax).
